Over Fifties Fitness Class Dundee
Over Fifties Outdoor Fitness Class Dundee.
327. We are a small but growing group of over fifties ( or thereabouts) outdoor fitness diehards. Based in West Dundee, we have members from Lochee, Invergowrie, Dykes Of Gray, Longforgan, Craigowl, Birkhill, and Liff
We run outdoor circuit training fitness classes for the over fifties in West Dundee, exercising outside throughout the year in all weathers. These days, to keep fit we exercise more for invigoration, than for annihilation, but we can still get that old endorphin rush after training.
Fitness Level.
Although we no longer exercise at the same level as in our youths, our fitness classes are still challenging for the older athlete, and requires a basic level of fitness. Everyone is free to exercise at their own level, so no need to worry if you are unsure whether you can keep up.
While our outdoor exercise sessions are aimed at the over fifties, they are free for anyone of all ages to take part. Our slightly wacky but enthusiastic group consists of men and women of varied ages from 40 to 72 years of age.
We include a number of senior fitness enthusiasts in our group, and the occasional younger teen. Anyone of any age is welcome to join our group.
Many of us have a long history of sport and fitness behind us, with all the niggling injuries, lack of mobility, and joint stiffness that comes with that. We may be a little over the hill, but still understand the importance of keeping fit despite those old injuries and mobility issues.
The Best Anti Aging Pill.
The most important thing about keeping fit as we age is the activity itself, and the effects it has on our well being and our health generally.
It is lack of activity that destroys our health and well being, and leads to muscle atrophy along with weight gain. They say that exercise is the best anti-aging medicine. The importance of exercising throughout middle and old age cannot be exaggerated.
For older people, and particularly seniors, it is absolutely vital for health, mentality and mobility, to keep the body ticking over, and to provide some occasional stress.
Wear Out Or Rust Out
Once you stop exercising the rust starts to set in bit by bit. Joints stiffen, ligaments tighten, muscles atrophy, and the weight starts to pile on. By sixty years of age we have reached our maximum weight, and may start to even lose weight. But much of this weight loss can be attributed to muscle loss.
Our philosophy is that it is better to wear out than to rust out. But when you exercise in old age you are not generally putting the same strain on your joints with the twisting and turning that does the damage when young.
With the right weight bearing exercises, you increase muscle tone, ligament strength, and bone density.
Just Start.
The hardest thing about exercise as you age is getting started. The easiest thing is to start tomorrow. But once you have started exercising the hardest thing is to stop.
Join Us.
If you are interested in joining us for a free outdoor circuit training session in 2025, just turn up with a mat five minutes before the class starts. Or email us for further information.
We can be found on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons throughout the year at 17:30 by the South Road Skate Park, next to the car park.
Circuit Training.
Circuit training is a high intensity workout consisting of a number of stations or exercises, with little or no rest between each exercise.
Of course, high intensity for us older people isn’t what it used to be, but an important aspect of fitness for the older athlete is to push yourself every now and again.
Functional Fitness.
As we get older and attempt to keep hold of some of our old fitness levels what we need more than anything is functional fitness. That is fitness that prepares us for real life activities that we tend to do less and less of as we get older.
Running Group.
Our small running group organise runs around Dundee with variable routes and distances. Routes include hills and flats.
Who Are The Classes For ?
Our classes are aimed at the fit over fifties, but also anyone who likes to keep fit outdoors in all weathers. That includes all ages, and all fitness levels.

A vigorous five mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world.”
