What Is The Best Dressmakers Mannequin

251. There is not a single “best” mannequin – only the best one for your purpose. The right choice depends on how you work, your experience level, and your budget. Choosing the right mannequin is only part of the process—knowing how to use it is what actually improves fit and design.

If you’re serious about dressmaking or draping, understanding professional pattern cutting techniques makes a far bigger difference than the mannequin itself.

  • Home sewers usually need a fixed mannequin that closely matches their own body.
  • Dressmakers working with clients benefit from adjustable or multi-size forms.
  • Professional pattern cutters  typically rely on one highly accurate, fixed size dummy designed for a specific fit standard.

Prices range from very affordable to several thousand pounds, reflecting differences in realism, durability, and precision.

What Is A dressmakers Mannequin ?

Also known as a dress form, tailors dummy, or body form, a mannequin is a three-dimensional model of the human body used for:

  • Draping fabric
  • Fitting garments
  • Developing patterns
  • Displaying finished pieces

For professionals, it’s not just a tool – Its a core part of the design process. As industry guidance notes, mannequins allow designers to refine silhouette and fit in real time.

Why Use A Mannequin ?

Working on a stand ( often called draping) allows you to:

  • See how fabric behaves on a body
  • Adjust fit instantly
  • Develop patterns more intuitively

Many professional pattern cutters  combine draping with flat pattern cutting for the most accurate results. If you want to learn how professional pattern cutters  use the stand to drape and translate designs into patterns

Key Features To Look For.

A good mannequin should have:

  • Correct proportions and size
  • Height adjustability
  • Pinnable surface (essential for draping)
  • Realistic body shape
  • Markable surface or reference lines

Cheap mannequins may tick some of these boxes, but often lack durability and accuracy.

Types Of Dressmakers Mannequins.

Torso mannequin ( most common)

Best for dresses, tops, jackets and coats. This is the most versatile option for most users. Some have extra ease built in and have a pad allowance  for jackets or coats. make sure you get the correct one.

Full Body Mannequin

Useful for complete outfits, but significantly more expensive.

Hip Forms

Designed for  skirts – typically used in specialised settings. Not cost effective for home sewers

Full Length Legs.

Used for trousers or skirts. Really useful for fitting trousers.

Fixed vs Adjustable Mannequins

Fixed (Professional Standard)

  • Highly accurate proportions
  • Ideal for pattern cutting
  • Long lasting

Adjustable (Dressmakers Choice)

  • Covers multiple sizes
  • useful for working with different clients
  • Less accurate  for draping

Professionals prefer fixed mannequins because they are trained to work with precise measurements for a particular brand.

Budget Options vs Professional Models

Budget (e.g. Polystyrene Forms)

  • Lightweight and inexpensive
  • Suitable for beginners
  • Limited durability and accuracy

Professional mannequins

  • Made with foam and fabric coverings
  • Fully pinnable and realistic
  • Built to last decades

A high quality mannequin is a long-term investment for serious work.

Extra Features To Consider

  • Collapsible shoulders – Helpful for fitting tight garments. Worth the extra coat for a lifetime of use
  • Detachable arms – useful for sleeve shaping
  • ease built into the form – important for coats or layered garments
  • Foot pedal for easy change of height – Useful but not essential
  • Wheels – Not essential for most people

What To Avoid

Display mannequins ( shop window types) are not suitable for dressmaking:

  • Hard non pinnacle surface
  • Unrealistic body proportions
  • Designed for aesthetics, not function

Display mannequins should never be used for pattern making

Custom And DIY Options

  • Custom mannequins can replicate your exact body. shape, but are very expensive
  • DIY forms (e.g. duct tape methods) are cheaper but very time consuming, less durable, and not pinnable

How Much Should you Spend ?

  • Entry level mannequins: around £30 – £50
  • Mid range adjustable forms: £100 – £300
  • Professional forms: £500 – £3000

Your choice should reflect how often you will use it and the level of accuracy you will need. A good professional mannequin will last a lifetime, with maybe a service and a recovering after thirty years. A cheap polystyrene option is perfectly OK to start.

Where To Buy

  • Online market places ( Amazon, Ebay) for budget options
  • Specialist suppliers for professional mannequins: Morplan,
  • Dedicated manufacturers for high end or custom forms; Kennet and Lindsell, Alvanon ( for Alvaforms)

Best Mannequin For Professional Pattern Cutter

Professional pattern cutters will normally use one mannequin for work, and a one mannequin for their own private use. Both dummies will likely be very similar, as they need to be  functional, durable, cost effective, and a practical size for their purpose.  The professional pattern cutter  will normally choose a torso on wheels with collapsible shoulders for work, but for home may replace the wheels with a flat base. Wheels are handy for work, but not so useful at home.

A professional pattern cutter generally needs a very accurate tailors dummy for just one size, and sometimes just one garment type. The size and shape must accurately reflect the specific body type the brand it is designed  for.

There are a huge variety of  mannequins available for professionals and amateurs alike.Dressmaker dummies can be used for displaying and fitting garments, or modelling and fitting patterns, toiles and garments. A good dressmakers mannequin can be very expensive, but a great investment.

Learn Pattern Cutting Using A Mannequin

To get the best out of your mannequin you need to learn how to use it to create high quality patterns. Create your own block patterns without formulas by using your mannequin.

Learn How To Drape On The Stand

Many designers have no knowledge of pattern cutting theory. They use a technique called draping on the stand. this is far more intuitive that flat pattern cutting, and is an excellent technique used by more creative people.

BOOK A LESSON

Best Dummy For Dressmaker

A dressmaker or home sewer who just makes for themselves will need a fixed dressmakers dummy, or mannequin that closely reflects their own body type. A professional dressmaker who makes for a wide variety of clients will either need multiple sizes, or something  far more flexible than a fixed mannequin.

Economy Polystyrene Dummies For Beginners.

Polystyrene dummies are very cheap and very light. They have  a soft, removable cover, and come with a tripod.  We like to draw on the white polystyrene torso with black felt pen to add some useful guidelines.

The shape is far from perfect, and it wont withstand years of pinning. Those pins have to be inserted at a right angle, and are not that secure.  But it can serve a  general purpose for learning how to cut patterns on the stand.

Costing between £35 and £80, which includes a tripod base, they are a good cost effective solution for a beginner.

Children’s Mannequins

Childrenswear requires a lot more sizes than adult wear, so anyone considering starting a Childrenswear band would need to purchase at least three different sizes in order to check the fit. One size would need to be the base size, while the other two sizes would need to be the extremes. Kidswear stands are not as robust as adult stands, but they are significantly cheaper.

Learn To Use A Mannequin Like a Professional

A high quality mannequin is only as useful as the skills behind it. In professional studios mannequins are used alongside pattern cutting techniques to:

  • Develop accurate blocks
  • control fit and proportions
  • Turn ideas into repeatable designs

If you want to move beyond trial and error, learning pattern cutting is the next step.

EXPLORE PATTERN CUTTING CLASSES

Pattern Cutting And Sewing Classes.

We at The London Pattern Cutter, are  interested in dressmaker mannequins   for use with teaching our various one-to-one   pattern cutting course in London , and also our one-to-one dressmaking class in London. We  encourage the use of draping on  the stand, in conjunction with flat pattern cutting for our students. We run pattern cutting, grading, and sewing  classes from various locations around London.

Learn how to cut patterns and make your own blocks the way the experts do. Pattern blocks are either created from a pattern drafting system, or from a good professional mannequin. For a standard size it is best to use a mannequin. For a non standard size you can either use a

Have you ever tried to draft your own blocks, and found that they just dont look right when sewn together ? Or when they are sewn together the armhole and neck dont create a smooth run ? Or the balance isnt right ?

We love to model on the stand to properly learn about how to cut patterns in our pattern cutting classes. Right from the very start we throw the theory book out of the window and start with getting our students to make a block for the dummy, using the dummy.

If you prefer to learn from home, we  offer interactive   online sewing classes .  That means that you are being taught at the same time as you are learning, so the teacher can interact with you if you need further help or explanation.

Best Mannequin For Dressmakers.

Whereas a dressmaker would either want to use the dummy to make clothes for themselves, or a variety of differently shaped clients, a pattern cutter normally just needs to make patterns for one standard size. For ladies that is usually a size 10 or 12. For men probably 38″ or 40″. For children it can be any mid size for a particular range of sizes.

The professional pattern cutter will become very familiar with exactly how a pattern for that one size should look. A tailor or dressmaker on the other hand, needs to familiarise themselves with an enormous variety of different shapes and sizes. In fact they will have a disproportionate number of clients with more extreme body shapes.

A Tailor usually relies on his drafting skills and a formula rather than a mannequin. Over time he will learn to adapt his formula for each client. The dressmaker will often have an adjustable figure, or they may use padding to adjust a basic stand.

Dressmakers may prefer to use an adjustable stand that covers a range of sizes. They come in a soft These are acceptable for what they are. They come in a soft covering, which makes them pinnable. But they would not be suitable for pattern cutting purposes.

Different years have different shapes depending not just on the natural body shape of the time, but also influenced by the under garments of the era.

Swimwear And Sportswear Dummies.

Dummies for swimwear, lingerie and sportswear need to have different qualities to standard dummies. They need to have extra give to mimic the human body`s flexibility. Intimate / swimwear figures for compressionwear.

How Much Does  A Dressmakers mannequin Cost ?

Prices can vary enormously, depending on what you need it for and how much you are willing to pay. You can pick up a very cheap polystyrene  dummy for around £30.

A good professional dummy on the other hand,  will cost hundreds, or even several thousands of pounds, but will last a lifetime, with a re-covering every thirty years or so. A good mannequin is a great investment for anyone serious about pattern cutting, who just needs to create patterns and fit garments for ONE size.

Some dummies may be used for display purposes, while others are used for fitting garments. For our purposes, we are just interested in the ones for fitting garments. Display mannequins are totally unsuited for this purpose primarily because the body shape tends to be totally idealistic and unreal.

Detachable Arms.

For most people detachable arms are not an essential for a dressmakers dummy, but they are quite handy so to speak. But they can cost an arm and a leg. Without an arm anything with a sleeve tends to look quite empty, without body, or fulness.

Centre Back Length.

It is common practise in the pattern cutting world to make the centre back neck to waist length longer than most stands allow for. This is because we build in some excess length in order to make one size fit as many customers as possible.

Hiring A Dummy.

Some places do hire out dummies, but they can work out expensive doing it that way. My colleague, Emile  hires out studio space and industrial equipment  in Greenwich

FAQ

What Is The Best Size Adult Mannequin To Buy ?

The most common size for professional ladies pattern cutters to buy is either size 10 for a younger brand,  or size 12 for an older brand. . A mans pattern cutter would buy a size 38″ chest for younger brands, or 40″ for older brands.

Are Collapsible Shoulders Worth It ?

Professional mannequins last a lifetime – with maybe some recovering every thirty years or so. The linen skin tends to need replacing about the same time as the shoulders need repairing. Most pattern cutters would think that the extra £50 or so is well worth it for the convenience of collapsible shoulders.

What Is Modelling On The Stand ?

Pattern cutters  may refer to modelling on the stand, or draping on the stand. This is how most  professional pattern cutters  work. Yes, we use flat pattern cutting methods too. In fact, we use a mix of the two methods to obtain the best results.
