Sportswear Pattern Cutting For Performance & Fit
Creating high quality sportswear starts with understanding how the body moves. Every pattern is developed to support full range of motion, flexibility, and comfort across different sports.
Many garments share similar foundations – such as:
- skin suits, singlets, and leotards
- Cycling and triathlon suits
- Swimwear and performance wear
However, each sport requires precise adjustments in pattern shape, panel placement, and fit to meet its unique demands.
Technical Sportswear Pattern Development
As garments become more technical, pattern cutting becomes more specialised.
We develop patterns for :
- Cycling jackets and performance outerwear
- Running and training apparel
- motorsport and equestrian garments
Each design incorporates advanced materials, technical features, and sport specific functionality, ensuring your product performs under real conditions.
Sportswear Sampling & Product Development
Accurate fit is critical in sportswear. We provide end to end sample development, including:
- First prototypes
- Fit testing and refinement
- Second samples for optimisation
Poorly fitting garments can limit performance and damage your brand reputation. Our process ensures your product is tested, refined and production ready before launch.
we also offer small-scale UK manufacturing, ideal for startups and niche sportswear brands.

Bill has been creating sportswear patterns as a UK freelancer for forty years – And a fitness enthusiast all his life. A qualified gym coach and indoor cycling instructor, with a passion for ergonomics and all aspects of sportswear development.
Creating patterns for sportswear requires a thorough understanding of ergonomics, garment construction, fabrics, and all aspects of modern sportswear technology.
We can provide you with expertly made sportswear samples, and small scale specialist UK sportswear manufacturing.
Activewear Pattern Shapes.
In order to create great patterns for sportswear it is vital to understand how the body moves, and how to create the pattern shapes to allow for those movements.
A lot of sports have quite similar requirements from their clothing, especially those that use stretch fabrics with a lot of leeway for movement. In those cases the differences may be quite minor.
A rower may wear an all-in-one suit that looks just like a wrestlers Singlet. Or a weight lifters Leotard. They will be similar to a cyclists Skinsuit, or a triathletes Speedsuit. Or a swimmers Tanksuit.
Each garment may start with the same basic shape, but will have multiple subtle differences specific to the sport in question. Some of those differences may be in the pattern shape, or panelling.
Technical Garment Development For Sportswear Brands.
Those differences become greater, the more technical a garment gets. A cyclists technical jacket, a runners runners jacket, a jockeys jacket , and a motor cyclists jacket may are all totally different, although there are similarities in the pattern shaping.
Sportswear has an increasingly technological aspect to it, that adds an extra dimension to pattern cutting and sample development. Every sport has its own special requirements.
Custom Pattern Cutting Service.
While we can buy in ready made garments to be customised by us, our main business is to make bespoke patterns and garments. We then do the sample development, and also provide short runs for small sportswear brands.
Athleisure.
Athleisure needs to be cut with many of the considerations of sportswear and activewear, but is not so specific in its requirements. The main factors are comfort and appearance.
A lot of Athleisure is really poorly cut, because the patterns tend to be cut by very inexperienced pattern cutters with no understanding of fit.
While the cut of the athleisure garment isnt as vital as for designated sportswear, it still needs to be comfortable and functional. The pattern and sample development should be significantly cheaper than technical sportswear as there is less sample development necessary.
