How To Start T Shirt Brand (Step By Step Guide)

313. Starting a t-shirt brand is one of the most accessible ways to enter the fashion industry – but it’s also one of the most competitive. The difference between brands that succeed and those that stall usually comes down to three things: Clear positioning, product quality, and smart execution.

This guide walks you through the entire process from idea to launch – using practical, industry level insight.

Define Your Niche And Audience.

Before you design anything, get specific about who you are selling to.

Avoid:

  • “Streetwear for everyone”.
  • “Cool graphic tees”.

Instead, aim for:

  • Gym focussed performance tees.
  • Minimalist premium basics.
  • Niche communities (skate, tech, music, etc.).

Ask yourself:

  • Who is this for?
  • What problem does it solve? (fit, identity, quality, price).
  • Why would someone choose this over existing brands ?

The more specific your audience, the easier everything else becomes.

Decide On Your Product Direction.

You have two main routes:

Option A: Blank T-Shirts (Printed).

  • Buy ready made garments.
  • Add your design via printing.

Pros:

  • Low startup cost.
  • Fast to launch.
  • No product development.

Cons:

  • Limited control over fit and quality.
  • Harder to stand out.

Option B: Custom Made T-Shirts.

  • Develop your own patterns and fits.
  • Manufacture from scratch.

Pros:

  • Unique fit and identity.
  • Higher perceived value.
  • Stronger brand differentiation.

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost.
  • Longer development time.

Beginner tip: Start with blanks unless your brand depends heavily on fit and quality.

Create Your Designs.

Your designs should match your audience – not just your taste.

Think about:

  • Simplicity vs bold graphics.
  • Logo vs concept driven designs.
  • Longevity ( will people wear this in a year?).

Avoid over designing. Many successful brands start with:

  • Clean typography.
  • Subtle branding.
  • Strong positioning.

Choose A Production Method.

Print On Demand (POD).

  • No inventory.
  • You only pay when you sell.

Best for:

  • Testing ideas.
  • Low risk launches.

Bulk Production.

  • Order stock up front.

Best for:

  • Higher margins.
  • Building a “real” brand.

Custom Manufacturing.

  • Fully bespoke garments.

Best for:

  • Premium brands.
  • Long term growth.

Understanding Fit And Quality (Critical).

One of the biggest reasons t-shirt brands fail is poor fit.

Most beginners overlook:

  • Proportions.
  • Fabric weight.
  • Neck shape.
  • Sleeve length.

Industry insight; Many manufacturers do not prioritise proper sizing and grading. This leads to inconsistent fits across sizes.

If you are serious about building a brand:

  • Test samples thoroughly.
  • Compare with successful brands.
  • Get professional input if possible.

Source Suppliers Or Manufacturers.

Depending on your route, you will need:

  • Blank suppliers.
  • Printers.
  • Manufacturers.

When choosing:

  • Always request samples.
  • Check consistency.
  • Start small.

Red flags:

  • no sampling process.
  • Poor communication.
  • Unrealistic pricing.

Price Your Products Properly.

Your price should reflect:

  • Cost of goods.
  • Branding.
  • Target market.

Typical structure:

  • Budget brands: Low margin, high volume.
  • Premium brands: High margin, lower volume.

Avoid under pricing – Its one of the fastest ways to kill a brand.

Build Your Brand Identity.

This is more than a logo.

You need:

  • A clear aesthetic.
  • Consistent messaging.
  • a defined point of view.

Ask:

  • What does your brand stand for ?
  • How should it feel?

Strong brands are:

  • Recognisable.
  • Consistent.
  • Focused.

Set Up Your Sales Channels.

Most brands start online.

Options:

  • Your own website.
  • Marketplaces.
  • Social commerce.

Keep it simple:

  • Clean design.
  • Strong product images.
  • Clear descriptions.

Market Your Brand.

Without marketing nothing sells.

Start with:

  • Social media ( especially visual platforms).
  • Influencer seeding.
  • Organic content.

Focus on:

  • Lifestyle, not just product.
  • Storytelling.
  • Consistency.

Start Small And Test.

Dont over invest early.

Instead:

  • Launch with a small collection.
  • Test designs.
  • Gather feedback.
  • Improve.

Many successful brands evolve significantly after launch.

Scale Strategically.

Once something works:

  • Double down on best sellers.
  • Improve quality.
  • Expand product range.

Avoid scaling too fast without:

  • Proven demand.
  • Reliable production.

Common Mistakes To avoid.

  • Trying to appeal to everyone.
  • Ignoring fit and quality.
  • Overcomplicating designs.
  • Ordering too much stock too early.
  • Weak branding.

Final Thoughts.

Starting a t-shirt brand is simple – but building a successful one requires clarity, consistency, and attention to detail.

If you focus on:

  • A specific audience.
  • Strong product decisions.
  • Clear branding.

You will give yourself a far better chance of standing out in a crowded market.

Need Help Getting Started ?

If you want to take this further, working with an experienced pattern cutter or product developer can save time, money, and costly mistakes – especially if you are aiming to create custom garments rather than relying on blanks.

How Much Does It Cost ?

Costs on starting a T shirt brand in London can vary depending on your specific business. As a very loose guide, you may be looking at around £1000.

Just Start.

OK, that’s not an original slogan, but it does describe our philosophy. Our most successful clients are the ones who just get on with it, and learn exactly how to do it as they go.

You do need to have some idea of what you want to achieve and how to go about achieving it, but it takes time to learn marketing, and branding, and the rest.

If you are an ideas person, with creative talents, then use those talents to do what you are good at, while  employing people who have the talents or knowledge that you dont yet have.

Not only can we advise and support you every step of the way, but we can teach you the areas of the fashion business that you want to learn.

You first need to decide whether to use stock Ts by buying off the shelf, and apply the prints and embroidered designs yourself. Or whether you will be creating your own fit with your  chosen fabrics.

The second option is a little more involved, more satisfying, and adds value to the brand, with greater financial returns.

If you plan to just print your designs on to a stock T shirt, then you dont  need to source fabrics, or bother with tech packs. To get started, you just need to be able to set up your business and design the prints, embroidery, or applications.

If your purpose for designing T shirts is to apply  prints, or embroidery, then you would also need some understanding of those processes. The fabric and shape may then  be considered of  secondary importance.

Creating  your own T shirt design from your chosen fabric means a slightly more involved process. You need to source your fabric, design your style, decide what fit you want, and  what construction to use.

Our T Shirt Startup Workshop.

We run a one-to-one startup workshop for budding entrepreneurs interested in setting up and running a T shirt design business. The workshop is based around our standard fashion startup workshop, but is more specialised to cover the peculiarities of running a T shirt business.

While some of our clients are interested more in the creative design aspect of T shirts, others are more interested in producing merchandise. Our business startup workshop is custom built for your own specific requirements.

Create A Tech Pack.

In order to ensure that your T shirt is made exactly as you want it to be, it is necessary to create a T shirt tech pack. This is essentially a blueprint for your design.

Printing From Home.

If you want to set up a T shirt printing business from home you can do so with very little outlay. If you just want to print or embroider ready made stock Ts, then you would  need to buy the printing machinery, the Ts, and the inks etc.

It would be advisable to outsource this to begin with, in order to test the market, and to gain some experience before doing it yourself.

Cut And Sew.

If you want to go one step further, you could also cut and sew your own Ts from home. Again, you wouldn’t need a great outlay. Just as with printing from home, you would be well advised to outsource production initially.

If you make your own Ts you are free to choose any fabric that you like. This can add considerable value to your product. You may prefer a high quality cotton, or a bamboo fabric.

To sew the Ts you would need a few specialist machines that you could easily pick up second hand. Good industrial sewing machines can last a lifetime, and retain their value over many years.

You would also need machinery for cutting the fabric, unless you would be cutting everything by hand, as some do. A good pair of levered grading sheers can cut through many layers, but can be tough on your hands.

If you choose to manufacture your own Ts, you have to go through all  the same processes, like pattern making, sampling, grading, and tech pack design that any other type of clothing business would require. But it is  much simpler, and decidedly cheaper.

Choose A Niche.

You can either choose a niche market ahead of launching, so that you are specifically targeting your products. Or just get started first, then see where it leads. You may have a particular age category in mind, or an interest group, such as skate boarders.

There is plenty to learn about running a T shirt business, so you need to just get stuck in. You can sort out your marketing and branding as you go, but it does no harm to as and when you are able.

We offer a wide range of classes and workshops to cover all the aspects of running a T shirt business that you will need, including pattern cutting classes, and costing workshops.

Print On Demand.

print on demand is a business model in which you can easily create your own clothing line, relying on a third party to provide all the printing and shipping.

1 – Screen Printed Transfers

2 – CAD Cut – Heat Transfer Vinyl for low quantities.

3- Heat Cut – Heat Transfer Vinyl

4 – Digital – Screen Printed Transfer.

We provide one-to-one pattern cutting classes to assist you in making your first patterns. Beginners are welcome.

Custom Made Vs Blanks.

One of the first decisions any new T shirt  brand needs to make is whether to use pre-made blank T shirts, or to  have  them custom made. There are advantages and disadvantages for each method.

Having custom made T shirts is more expensive, but  should provide better quality of fit, fabric and make. The T shirt sampling process is pretty straightforward, in comparison with other more complicated garments.

  • Sourcing factories
  • Printing methods
  • Quality control

Practical Workshops.

If you already have your designs, patterns, fabrics  and tech packs  you can just bring them to us and we will make them up to your specifications. Or if you need more in depth guidance we can walk you through everything with our one to one mini workshops designed to get you up and running.

In these two hour workshops, run by highly experienced experts, we  discuss and develop your ideas.  We can sketch up your designs as professional technical  sheets. We help you choose fabrics , decide on stitching, construction and design details.

We can advise on sizing, labeling and find cheap sources of fabrics. And walk you through the process of getting your design to market. While we can produce small runs, we do not do bigger runs, but  can refer you to larger scale manufacturers.

We also go through the basic errors that start-ups tend to make and suggest a strategy to ensure you get the results you want.

Most new designers do not understand the importance of fit and quality required  for a  designer label. Although a T shirt may appear to be the simplest of shapes to pattern for, a good fit is vital in order to avoid returns.

Small Production Runs.

There is a big demand by new brands  for high quality, small scale production  for T shirts, along with design and pattern development.

We are one of the few UK factories  that welcome these new brands.  We can provide   bespoke T shirt design and development services,  made and designed to your own specifications.
