306. The London Pattern Cutter have a small team of UK based pattern cutting tutors available to pass on their extensive knowledge through a wide range of live online pattern cutting classes and courses.
We have a range of all rounders and specialist pattern cutter tutors for menswear, ladieswear, childrenswear, swimwear, lingerie, bras, sportswear, tailoring, streetwear, and denim.
Your Tutors.
Some of our online pattern cutting tutors are also available for face to face pattern cutting classes, so you can do most of your learning online at home, then travel for face to face tuition when necessary.
One To One Classes.
Our one to one on-line pattern cutting classes are incredibly good value, as you get to learn exactly what you want, as and when you need it. You will have the complete attention of the tutor for each class, with no dead time waiting to be seen.
You can choose to have just one four hour class. Or one class a week. Or a two hour class every day if you really want.
For the most cost-effective solution it is recommended that you do a certain amount of learning in your own free time. You can make notes of any queries you may have in this time.
Pattern Making Classes Online.
Our online pattern cutting courses are designed for beginner and intermediate students. These are live interactive classes, and fully customisable courses, designed around your own specific learning requirements.
You can learn as much or as little about pattern making as you want. You can drop in and out of learning as and when you like. You can pay as you go, with no need to pay for a whole year of learning in advance.
Our Students learn from the comfort of their own home, at whatever time suits them. There is no wasted travelling time, or associated costs. Remote pattern cutting classes, using real time tutors are a great way to learn for beginners.
Not everyone likes to work in the same way. Some people like to use Zoom. Others hate Zoom and prefer to communicate with texts and photos. We are happy to work with you, using the methods that work best for you.
Distance Learning From Home.
Distance learning means that anyone can learn how to cut patterns the professional way, without having to live near a fashion school or in a major city. If you would like to learn about pattern cutting, or drafting, and you cant travel, then our remote one-to-one learning is the perfect answer.
Total beginners.
If you are a total beginner to pattern making, then we can teach you the basics right from the start. We can discuss your objectives before commencing the learning.
You may want to create a set of pattern blocks that you can use for future styles. Or you may want to learn how to adapt shop bought patterns for your dressmaking projects.
Maybe you just want to learn about one aspect of pattern cutting to begin with. Or you have a series of questions about pattern cutting that you would like answered. It is entirely up to you.
We can teach you about seam allowances, grain direction, pattern drafting, dart manipulation, and creating fullness. We like to use a mix of flat pattern cutting and draping, but it is a good idea to get used to draping from the very start.
Pattern Drafting Systems.
Beginners often have difficulties drafting blocks using various systems based on the flat pattern cutting method. These pattern drafting systems can take a while to understand and to perfect.
To begin with they will more often than not produce a block that does not fit together quite as it should. The armhole and neck runs may not be smooth, or the fit may be out.
It can be difficult to understand the complicated formulae, or to understand the logic behind the system. With some practise we learn how to adjust our drafting method to work more accurately for us. We can help you through this, and help you understand the system more fully.
Renata teaches the tried and tested M.Mueller & Sohn pattern making system that was created in 1891, and is still widely used today.
There are many things that pattern cutters learn over the years that make cutting patterns much easier and more accurate. We can teach you these little tips and tricks to help you with your learning.
A Good Mannequin.
Everyone who is serious about learning pattern cutting, and definitely anyone who would like to make a career out of it, needs to invest in a good professional mannequin. These are not cheap, but they do last a lifetime.
The type of mannequin you need depends on what area of pattern cutting you intend to learn, and the type of garments you would like to make.
Modelling On The Stand.
Experienced pattern cutters often use a combination of flat pattern cutting, and modelling on the stand. If you have a mannequin at home, you can play around with this technique and learn much more than you would otherwise.
The Classes.
There is no set form to the classes. Each individual student can choose exactly what they want to learn, or can rely on the teacher to design a course to suit them. All students can be doing entirely different things.
If you have a pattern cutting problem that you need solved, then we can help you solve it with our expert help.
If you are trying to create a pattern, but are stuck on something that you dont understand, we can help you figure it out.
If you want to create or draft a block, then we can guide you through the process step by step.
Maybe you are trying to make a tailored jacket, but the balance looks wrong, or the sleeves dont hang correctly.
Whatever your goal, or whatever problem you need to fix, we can help you. Your tutor will guide you every step of the way.
How It Works.
The student pays for blocks of four hours. They are free to drop in and out of the classes as and when they choose. And of course, they can continue working after class at home if they wish.
Part of the class will be spent with the student working, while part will be spent with the tutor advising and explaining what to do. The tutor will spend as long as is necessary to instruct the student.
This is not a video class, but we do use photos and videos where necessary. The student supplies written and visual information to the tutor. The tutor supplies the suggestions, advice and solutions.
Most of what is done in a studio based class can be done using these methods. A good pattern cutter can see at a glance what is needed to correct most problems regarding fit, balance and shape.
