207. The minimum amount you need to start a swimwear line on a budget in the UK is around £3000. But realistically you will need £5000 – £10000 plus. For most swimwear startup brands it is important to start slowly, with a small collection and minimum quantities.
While it can cost many thousands of pounds for a startup swimwear label, it can be done relatively cheaply with some careful budgeting, and by employing the right strategy.
Much of the initial cost involves the sample development, but if you ensure from the beginning that you have ownership of the patterns, that means that you can use those same patterns for future designs, without having to pay for them again.
Some factories will include the patterns in their overall price, but the patterns will be their property, rather than yours. Other factories allow you to pay separately for the patterns. Ideally you need to have the patterns and samples made separately.
Make Your Own Patterns To Save Money.
One way to cut costs is to learn how to make your own patterns. Swimwear is very specialised, but it doesn’t take too long to get a grasp of the basics. If you are making a number of designs based on the same basic shape it is possible to learn how to do some of the pattern work yourself.

It is not so easy to make the samples unless you are an experienced sewer with the proper equipment. It would not be feasible to teach an inexperienced sewing machinist how to make swimwear garments, but an experienced sewer could learn quickly.

The big brands can afford to put huge amounts of money into their business. They can afford to employ the very best in every position, so are almost guaranteed to succeed whatever they do.
Many top designers, financed by big corporations will waste money left, right, and centre. And yet they will still succeed, as they generally employ enough experts to guarantee their success.
Being restricted in your spending is a good thing for a fashion startup. The discipline it ensures is invaluable. We try to encourage our clients to spend wisely.
Spending wisely does not necessarily mean spending less. There are many areas in which you can easily save money, but there are other areas where it is more cost effective to spend more.

Firstly, you need to ask yourself how much you can afford to spend. It is important to keep your budget in check. It is normally a bad idea to borrow money in order to get your brand off the ground – Unless maybe from your close family.

Secondly, you need to decide how many designs you would like to create. Unlike the big high street brands, a small startup brand needs to manufacture virtually all the designs that they sample.

Your Mentors.
