Vintage Sewing Patterns
How To Make Your Own Vintage Clothes.
To replicate your own vintage clothing you would be advised to either have an authentic reference garment, or an accurate vintage sewing pattern that you can, if necessary, resize and adapt to your own design.
As a pattern cutter with forty years experience, I would always opt to buy either a reference garment, or a genuine vintage pattern. To make an authentic vintage style from scratch would take a lot of trial and error.
It saves a hell of a lot of time and money to have a good, authentic starting point, rather than to develop the shape over several iterations. Although as a professional pattern cutter I would make a lot of changes to the original pattern, with seam allowances and construction, home sewers just need to cut the patterns out.
Buying Vintage Patterns Online.
Today there are a wide variety of vintage patterns and historic costume patterns available to buy, either as physical paper patterns, or PDF digital files. There are several specialist vintage pattern companies online in the UK. Some patterns are available in one size, while others can be bought in multiple sizes.
It is normally best to trace the patterns out onto some good pattern paper, keeping the original as a copy to file away securely.
I have bought several patterns myself from the vintage sewing company. This is their bio :-
