Childrenswear
Childrenswear Manufacture.
109/60). While it is true to say that childrens clothing is generally simpler to manufacture than adults clothing, kids clothing is governed by many rules and regulations that only apply to childrenswear.
Any startup brand owner needs to be aware of the extra safety and legal issues specific to childrenswear, for both the fabric and the garment.
There are various restrictions regarding flammability, cords and drawstrings as well as regulations about labelling.
But overall if you can get it right, childrenswear can be a very rewarding business. You need to to ensure that you employ the best technicians for your childrenswear patterns and samples.
Sewing childrens clothing is also a little tricky, because the pieces can be small and intricate. Each individual sewing operation can take less time, but the transition from one piece to the next remains the same.
The smaller fabric pieces to be sewn together to make the garments result in tighter turns, so manoeuvring is slow and laborious.
Baby Clothing.
Baby clothing is even smaller and more intricate than general children’s clothing. Although baby styles can be very basic, as with Childrenswear, it can be fiddly and time consuming to manufacture.

Pattern Cutting.
Childrenswear is a very specialised area within the clothing industry. It requires specialised knowledge to be able to make a good pattern. While not as technical, precise or standardised as other genres, there are other factors that make cutting childrenswear patterns more complicated.
But there is a great shortage of childrenswear technicians in the UK. That includes pattern cutters, sample machinists, garment techs and graders.
Base Size Pattern
In childrenswear there is no set base size. The base size could be anything from 3 years to 13 years. For most pattern cutters, It is not practical or cost effective to have eleven childrenswear mannequins.
It is very difficult to be familiar with how each of these eleven sizes should look, as the shapes can change dramatically from size to size. So anyone not making childrenswear patterns regularly will find it very hard to get the patterns right.
There are other complications with childrenswear patterns that an inexperienced pattern cutter would probably not be aware of.
Children’s Head Size.
A child’s head is almost full adult size. This means that if the neck of a closed neck style is graded according to the neck grade, the neck opening will be too small for their head to fit through. This means that the normal grading rules go out the window.
This is again a good reason to check the biggest and smallest sizes before finalising the grade rule increments.
Fitting a child’s garment can be difficult. Children will often not want to collaborate , or may get upset with trying certain types of garment. They often hate neck openings that are too tight.
While it may seem a good idea to use a well behaved, easy going child as a fit model, it may be that a less cooperative model would be more useful in the long run. Children may be brutally honest.
