The Sample Development Process.
Our sample development process for custom gymwear is the same as for every other type of garment we produce. We can provide the entire service, or you can pick and mix the services that you need.
We always produce a sample before grading the base pattern to the different sizes, and before production. The sample development service includes :-
- Design
- Fabric And Trim Sourcing
- Technical Sketch
- Tech Pack
- Pattern
- Toile
- Sample,
- Fitting
The Design.
Everything starts from the design. In order for us to make your sample you should provide us with all the information we need in order to produce your design accurately.
If you would like us to provide the designs according to your guidance, we can do that with our in-house design service.
The Sourcing.
Most of our clients provide their own fabrics and trims. We can often provide simple guidance for clients to do the sourcing themselves, or we can provide a sourcing service for them.
The Technical Sketch.
The technical sketch is a non stylised sketch containing any information that you consider important. The sketch would normally be a front and back view.
It is purely to illustrate to us what you want your design to look like, so it doesnt have to look professional. A bad hand drawing can be far better than a cumputer generated sketch, because everything on the hand drawn
The Tech Pack.
The Tech Pack is the blueprint for your design that contains all the information necessary to make your design exactly as it should be. Unlike most factories, we do not need a tech pack to create your designs.
While a tech pack can be a very extensive document, the standard tech pack should contain : – Technical sketch; Garment spec; Size chart.
If you need a tech pack, then we can provide a tech pack design service.
The Pattern.
The pattern is made with reference to the technical sketch, reference garments and design inspirations that you may provide us. The first pattern is made in a lightweight paper for ease of storage and transport.
Working with us, the patterns would be your property, that you can use for future production runs, and new styles.
It is important to understand that if a factory does not charge for the pattern, that cost is clawed back in the production cost, and the pattern does not belong to you.
The Toile.
The toile is a mock up of your style, in a suitable cheaper fabric. This stage is often omitted for gymwear, as each fabric has very specific qualities that may not be replicated in a cheaper fabric.
The Fit sample.
The fit sample is made in order to check the pattern, check the fit, and to evaluate the design. You need a sample before approaching the factory for production. The fit sample should be made in the same fabric and in exactly the same way as the final production garment.

The Fitting.
The sample would be fitted on either a mannequin, or a fit model. Or both. Many smaller brands would choose to use themselves, or a friend instead of a professional fit model. We can provide a fitting service if required, or the client can do this themselves.
The Grading.
Once the sample has been passed, then the next stage is to grade the base size to different sizes, following the size chart provided in the tech pack.
The Production Sample.
The production sample is made by the factory, meant to check the making before final production run. This sample should be used in order to judge the production garments.
The Production.
The production run should correspond with the sample produced by the factory.
Sportswear Startup Workshop.
For startup brands, we recommend that they take part in our swimwear startup workshop. This provides an overview of how to start and run any sportswear business.
Original Equipment Manufacture.
This refers to products that are designed by one company . The designer has complete control of the design process.
Original Brand Manufacture.
Original Design Manufacture.
Also referred to as private labelling. This is where an existing garment is taken and slightly altered in order to be sold under a different brand identity.
Although ODM avoids much of the startup costs of ODM, and can be significantly cheaper, the competition is far greater, and the profit margins are significantly lower.
