UK Clothing Manufacture.
Clothing Manufacturers In The UK.
(07). There had been a great resurgence in high quality UK clothing manufacturing from the 1980`s until very recently, following decades of decline. We believe that over the next decade we will again see a resurgence, led by fresh new British brands and emerging designers.
Along with these new brands will come manufacturing and all the peripheral businesses that go with them – Such as Printing and embroidery. Small businesses should begin to flourish again.
Made In Britain – The GB Brand.
Countries throughout the world still value highly the “Made in U.K.” label. It is a symbol of pride and for quality. That fact is not appreciated as much as it should be. In some ways it is not deserved, because it is a prestige that had been earnt many decades ago. We can start earning that prestige back by producing high quality garments at a reasonable price.
For most small businesses with small quantities, especially start-ups, it is infinitely better to manufacture in the U.K. than to gamble on foreign production.
Although it may be tempting to opt for a cheap offshore alternative to a UK clothing factory, we would strongly advise against it, unless the quantities make it viable. In that case, it can be an excellent option. But only if you have expert advice and help.
We strongly believe in supporting the British Clothing Industry and we spend a lot of time researching good factories and suppliers throughout the U.K.

Small Production Runs.
We at The London Pattern Cutter can offer small production runs, along with sampling and product development. If larger quantities are required, we can connect you with various clothing factories in London and throughout the U.K. that offer both large scale and small scale production.
Generally we have no minimum quantities, but obviously the smaller the quantities required the higher the cost per piece. If the quantities required are very low then London based clients would be advised to have their production completed in London, at least while they learn the ropes.
We can either guide you through the production process or we can take control of this part of the operation for you with our project management service.
Tech Packs.
Many UK factories insist on having a tech pack before they will consider taking on your production. It is important that you choose your tech pack designer with caution, as it takes a lot of experience and knowledge to be able to design a professional tech pack.
We at The London Pattern Cutter do not ask for tech packs, preferring to use our own tried and tested ways of producing a good outcome. We do however, offer a highly professional and cost effective tech pack design service should you require one.
Startup Fashion Business Advice.
Whether you are an established Fashion Designer, or simply someone without any formal training who is interested in beginning a startup clothing company, it is absolutely essential to get the right advice from the outset. It would be fatal to begin a clothing company without it.
It can be very tempting for small clothing businesses to seek Offshore production with the greatly reduced prices on offer, along with promises of high quality production. But this is nearly always a mistake and will probably be a disaster as it is far harder to control the quality from the U.K.
We provide a number of workshops for fashion Business Startups. These are invaluable workshops for both complete novices and more experienced fashion people.
Our most popular workshop is our one-to-one Fashion Startup Workshop. Please check The London Pattern Cutter for details. Workshops we offer include :-
- FASHION BUSINESS START-UP
- CREATING A TECH PACK
- MAKING AND GRADING YOUR PATTERN
- QUALITY CONTROL
- MAKE YOUR OWN PATTERN
- START A FASHION BRAND
- BECOME A FREELANCER
Any Start-up Clothing Business needs all the help it can get in order to maximise its chances of success and to minimise risk. Initially I suggest keeping production in the U.K. with low volume runs. I do not generally recommend offshore production without expert advice and assistance.
The Production Process.
For anyone interested in having garments manufactured, even if you have no experience at all, the process is actually very straight forward. All you need are your ideas to begin with.
Just supply us with a sketch of the garment, no matter how basic or badly drawn, along with any written information deemed relevant. Include pictures of similar garments, or actual garments.
We will make a pattern along with a “toile” (mock up) if necessary. We will make any alterations needed, according to your instructions and then make a sample in your material. If you dont know where to get the material we can assist you there too.
Once the design is finalised we would grade the pattern for the different sizes. You will then be ready for production with a full set of professional patterns.
Although we can organise the whole production process for you, we would normally suggest small UK factories and enable you to organise everything yourself, using our professional advice.
We can provide professional guidance to ensure that everything runs smoothly. If you already have a factory you would like to use, we will normally get in touch with them so that we understand exactly how they work and what facilities they have.
This gives them confidence in you and also alerts them to the fact that there are professional people involved. Left to their own devices, many factories will try to take short cuts, or will not produce garments of a high quality.
We provide a number of one day and half day workshops for fashion Business Startups. These are invaluable workshops for both complete novices and more experienced fashion people. Please check The London Pattern Cutter for details. Workshops we offer include :-
