Pattern Cutting FAQ
What Is A Pattern ?
(063). In fashion, a pattern is the template from which the fabric is cut to make your garment.
What Is Fashion Pattern Cutting ?
Fashion pattern cutting is self evidently cutting patterns for fashion. This is done by interpreting a design and making it into a pattern that can then be used to cut out the fabric.
Are Your Patterns Made In Paper Or Card ?
We always use paper patterns for sampling, as these are easier to store, transport and alter than card patterns. The final graded patterns are made in card, for durability. We always make a fresh base size pattern, so the original can be stored for future reference.
Can You Provide Digital Patterns ?
Yes, we can provide digital patterns once the initial pattern is finalised and ready for grading.
How Much Do Patterns Cost ?
This is a question that we are frequently asked. But there is no straight forward answer. Most pattern will cost anywhere from £60 to £300. A T shirt pattern may cost £60. A lined jacket pattern may cost £300. Some ptterns may cost more.
The price of a pattern depends on a number of factors, such as the difficulty of the pattern, the seniority of the pattern cutter, and the amount of information we have to work with to interpret your design.
While all of our pattern cutters are very experienced, some types of patterns require particular skills that come at a higher price.
Do You Have A Price List ?
No, we dont have a definitive price list as prices can vary so much. We can give you an estimated price once we have an idea of what the work will entail.
Can You Give Me An Estimate If I Give You A Sketch ?
Yes.
Does Your Pattern Price Include Grading ?
No. The pattern prices are just for one size.
Do Pattern Price Include Alterations ?
Yes. The pattern price includes two set of (reasonable) alterations. This does not include a total redesign though. In practise, it is very rare for us to need more than two sets of alterations.
Does The Pattern Price Include A Toile ?
No. If possible, we try to avoid making a toile, as it can be an unnecessary cost. Sometimes it is essential though. We will always advise if we think that a toile is necessary.
What Do I Need To Give You For A Quote ?
We are not a fan of tech packs as they can cause so many problems if they are not made to a professional standard. We normally ask for a front and back sketch, along with any relevant information. Reference garments and mood boards are useful. Please phone for details.
Who Owns Patterns You Make For Us ?
You would own the patterns, as you have paid specifically for them. They are your property once they have been paid for. Many factories will offer you a service where they do not charge specifically for the pattern, but they charge extra for the production. In this case, the pattern belongs to the factory. This can cause problems if you want to use a different factory, or you need the original patterns as a base for further designs.
Do You Use Specialist Pattern Cutters ?
Yes, all our pattern cutters are very experienced, and specialised in various genres. It is extremely important to use specialists in all areas of pattern cutting.
