U.K. CLOTHING PRODUCTION

There has been a resurgence in UK clothing manufacturing recently, following decades of decline. And I believe that over the next decade we will see a further resurgence if Brexit is achieved. Countries throughout the world still value highly the “Made in U.K.” label.

For most small businesses, especially start-ups, it is infinitely better to manufacture in the U.K. than to gamble on foreign production. Although it may be tempting to opt for a cheap offshore  alternative to a U.K. factory, I would strongly advise against it, unless the quantities make it viable. Even then, I would strongly advise against going it alone.

While we do not specialise in clothing production, we can offer some limited small production. If larger quantities are required, we  can suggest various clothing factories in London and throughout the U.K. that offer both large scale and small scale production. Generally there are no minimum quantities, but obviously the smaller the quantities required the higher the cost per piece. If the quantities required are very low then London based clients would be advised to have their production completed in London, at least while they learn the ropes. I can either guide you through the production process or I can take control of this part of the operation for you with my project management service.

Whether you are an established Fashion Designer, or simply someone without any formal training who is interested in beginning a startup clothing company, it is absolutely essential to get the right advice from the outset. It would be fatal to begin a clothing company without it.

Clothing production in the U.K. has shrunk significantly since the 1980`s although in recent years there has been quite a resurgence . It can be very tempting for small clothing businesses to seek Offshore production with the greatly reduced prices on offer along with promises of high quality production. But this is nearly always a mistake and will probably be a disaster as it is far harder to control the quality from the U.K.

We provide a number of  one day and half day workshops for fashion Business Startups. These are invaluable workshops for both complete novices and more experienced fashion people. Please check The London Pattern Cutter for details. Workshops we offer include :-

  • FASHION BUSINESS START-UP ON A BUDGET
  • CREATING A TECH PACK
  • MAKING AND GRADING YOUR PATTERN
  • QUALITY CONTROL
  • MAKE YOUR OWN PATTERN
  • START A FASHION BRAND
  • BECOME A FREELANCER

Any Start-up Clothing Business  needs all the help it can get in order to maximise its chances of success and to minimise risk. Initially I suggest keeping production in the U.K. with low volume runs. I do not generally recommend offshore production without expert advice and assistance.

I find that there are a growing number of people who recognise  the “Made in Britain” tag as a symbol of pride and for quality that is respected throughout the world.  While I am quite happy to work with Clients who want to work with overseas factories and I recognise that this can be very successful with the correct approach, I  emphatically believe in supporting the British Clothing Industry and I spend a lot of time researching good factories and suppliers throughout the U.K.

While I am a highly skilled Pattern Cutter with forty years experience, I feel that the most important, and least recognised part of my job is the advice I can offer Startup businesses. My aim is to make the process as easy, problem free and economical as possible. More and more of my time is being devoted to the non pattern cutting part of the job, including giving advice, suggesting  factories and suppliers, compiling spec sheets, checking production  and ensuring that sizing is correct.

For anyone interested in having garments produced, even if you have no experience at all, the process is actually very straight forward. All you need are your ideas to begin with. Just supply me with a sketch of the garment, no matter how basic or badly drawn, along with any written information deemed relevant. Include pictures of similar garments, or even actual garments.  I will make a pattern along with a “toile” (mock up) if necessary. I will then alter the pattern if necessary, according to your instructions and then make a sample in your material. If you dont know where to get the material I can assist you there too. Once the design is finalised I would grade the pattern for the different sizes. You will then be ready to approach the factory with a full set of professional patterns that the factory can use and understand.

Although I could organise the whole production process for you, I would normally suggest factories so that you can organise everything yourself, using my advice. I can still be available for  professional guidance to ensure that everything runs smoothly. If you already have a factory you would like to use, I will normally get in touch with them so that I understand exactly how they work and what facilities they have. This gives them confidence in you and also alerts them to the fact that there are professional people involved. Left to their own devices, many factories will try to take short cuts, or will not produce garments of a high quality.

If you are interested in the idea of getting into the Clothing Business, or if you are already established please feel free to ring me for more information.  If you just require patterns, grades, quality control etc. these services are priced  according to the job rather than an hourly rate.
